Dougal Clumpas

While I was originally born in Scotland, I actually grew up in New Zealand (which explains the accent). I eventually came crawling back to the motherland though, the allure of the liquid gold was simply too strong.

I'm currently in my third year of my Chemistry undergrad, but copper pot stills remain my favourite distillation method.

I am known to try and sneak New Zealand whiskies into tastings, but other than that you will usually catch me drinking something heavily peated and cask strength.

Outside of whisky I enjoy playing and listening to weird genres of music, and cooking over-elaborate meals.

I'm originally from Boston and, since moving to the UK ten years ago, I have found that there is so much to learn about the world of whisky.


I would have to say that Ichiro's Malt Double Distilleries has been an all-time favourite, with Chichibu and Hanyu casks. I really enjoyed visiting Chichibu distillery in Japan last year (the photo is of me there!), and I have learnt so much from visiting many Scottish distilleries with the fantastic WoLS community.


Besides learning about whisky, I have also recently completed a PhD in education.
